Strudel is a traditional preparation originating from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, particularly popular in Austria and Germany. It is characterized by its thin dough and varied fillings, with apple strudel being the most well-known worldwide. However, there are many savory variants, among which spinach strudel stands out, very typical during Oktoberfest, the famous beer festival in Munich. In Latin America, depending on the country, it may have different names or variations, but it is commonly known simply as "strudel" or "spinach roll." Its popularity has transcended borders thanks to European migration and culinary fusion in countries like Mexico, Argentina, and Chile.
This dish combines the delicacy of phyllo dough with a nutritious and tasty filling, ideal for celebrations or family dinners. The combination of spinach with ingredients such as Parmesan cheese and an aromatic mix of spices makes it a delicious and healthy option. Furthermore, its preparation is relatively simple, allowing anyone to enjoy a piece of this Central European tradition at home.
How to Prepare Oktoberfest Spinach Strudel
To begin, simmer the onion and parsley in the broth until tender.
Then, set the mixture aside and cook the spinach according to the package instructions.
Drain the spinach very well, squeezing out the excess liquid to prevent the filling from becoming watery.
Add the onion mixture, breadcrumbs, egg white, Parmesan, nutmeg, and pepper to the spinach filling.
Mix all the ingredients well until a homogeneous preparation is obtained.
Place two sheets of phyllo dough on a damp towel on the work surface to prevent them from drying out while you work.
Spread half of the spinach mixture along the narrow edge of the phyllo dough and carefully roll it up like a jelly roll.
Brush the top and sides of the roll with skim milk so it turns golden when baked.
With a sharp knife, make several cuts on the top of the roll to vent steam during cooking.
Place the roll on a baking sheet prepared with non-stick spray.
Cover with another damp towel while you repeat the process with the last two sheets of phyllo dough and the remaining spinach mixture.
Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 25 to 30 minutes or until the strudels are golden and crispy.
Finally, cut each roll into six pieces and serve.
Oktoberfest spinach strudels are ideal to enjoy as appetizers or side dishes, providing a traditional flavor and a nutritious touch to any occasion.
