Old-fashioned shepherd's pie

History and Origin of Shepherd's Pie

Shepherd's Pie, known worldwide by its English name, is a traditional dish originating from the United Kingdom, specifically from Ireland and England. Its origin dates back to the 18th century when British peasants devised a practical and economical way to use leftover meat by covering it with mashed potatoes to create a comforting and nutritious dish.

In Latin America, although this dish is not commonly known by its original name, in some countries it is related to similar preparations that combine ground meat with mashed potatoes and corn or vegetables from different culinary perspectives. In Mexico, for example, there are similar recipes where meat is mixed with corn and mash, and in Argentina, homemade versions with regional variations can be found. This pie has transcended borders, adapting to local ingredients and gastronomic preferences, becoming a dish that represents the fusion of traditions.

How to Prepare Old-Fashioned Shepherd's Pie

Old-Fashioned Shepherd's Pie is a simple and delicious recipe that combines seasoned ground meat with onion, garlic, and herbs, topped with a layer of corn and a creamy mashed potato layer that is baked until golden and crispy. It is a perfect option for a family meal, as its deep and comforting flavor delights everyone.

Ingredients: Ground meat, butter, onion, garlic, sauce, potatoes, corn, salt, pepper, thyme, sage, paprika.

Preparation Steps:

In an oven-safe skillet, sauté the onions and garlic until they wilt, then remove.

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until done.

Remove the fat.

Return the onions and garlic, add salt, pepper, and thyme, add the sauce and mix evenly.

Cover everything with corn.

Spread the hot mashed potatoes over the corn, making grooves.

Place small pieces of butter on top and sprinkle a bit of paprika over the entire surface.

Place in the oven for approximately 1 hour at 300°F or until the potatoes are golden and crispy around the edge; we used a cast-iron skillet and it turned out excellent.

The longer you leave it in the oven, the better, because all the flavors blend and it becomes delicious.

You can lower the heat to leave it for longer.
