Impossible taco pie is a preparation that combines traditional Mexican flavors in an original and versatile format. This dish has its origins in Mexican home cooking, where recipes with ground meat and taco seasonings are very popular. The name "impossible" comes from the unusual mix of ingredients and the way it is cooked, creating a texture that seems to defy logic by being a pie with a baking mix base and a layer of meat that forms simultaneously.
In different Latin American countries, this dish may be known by different names or similar variations. For example, in Mexico and nearby countries, it is traditionally called "impossible taco pie," while in some regions of Central America, similar recipes are found under the name "meat pie with dough" or simply "baked meat pie." In Argentina and Chile, it might be likened to a version of "meat calzone" or "meat tart" with North American influences due to the use of baking mixes like Bisquick. Despite the variations, the essence of the dish remains: a delicious combination that integrates the richness of taco seasonings with the softness of a baked base.
How to Make Impossible Taco Pie
Ingredients: Ground beef, onion, taco seasoning, Bisquick, milk, eggs, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, stuffed olives.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Grease the pie plate, preferably a 10 x 1 1/2 inch one or an 8 x 8 inch square baking pan.
Cook and stir the ground beef with the onion in a 10-inch skillet until the meat is browned.
Drain the excess fat and then incorporate the taco seasoning mix into the meat.
Place the meat and seasoning mixture in the pie plate.
Beat the baking mix (Bisquick), milk, and eggs for about 1 minute with a wire whisk or a hand mixer until the mixture is almost smooth.
Pour this mixture over the meat in the pan.
Bake for about 25 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the pie and bake for about 2 more minutes or until the cheese melts.
Let it cool for 5 minutes before unmolding and serving.
Garnish with fresh chopped lettuce, tomato slices, and stuffed olives to give the dish a fresh and colorful touch.
To prepare half the recipe, use a 1-liter square or round pan. Reduce the baking mix to 1/2 cup, the milk to 3/4 cup, and the eggs to 2. Halve the remaining ingredient quantities. Reduce the beating time to 10 seconds with a wire whisk or hand mixer, or 30 seconds in a blender. In this case, increase the baking time to 30-35 minutes.
For high altitudes and only for the half recipe, use a 1 1/2-liter round pan or a 1-liter square pan; no other adjustments are necessary.
