Hamburger cake

History and origin of the hamburger pie

Hamburger pie is a recipe that combines the worldwide popularity of the hamburger with the homemade tradition of empanadas or savory pies. Its origin is not clearly defined, but it is believed to have emerged as a practical and delicious way to enjoy the flavors of a hamburger in a more portable and easy-to-serve format, especially at family gatherings or celebrations.

In different Latin American countries, although there is no universal name for this recipe, it can be found under similar terms such as "cheese and meat empanada" or "meat pie". The mix of ingredients and the use of pie crusts are reminiscent of traditional preparations like the Argentine empanada or the Mexican meat pie, adapted to typical ingredients such as beef, vegetables, and cheese that form the heart of the hamburger.

This recipe is very versatile and reflects the fusion between fast food and home cooking, popularizing a dish that combines flavor, practicality, and tradition.

How to prepare hamburger pie

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Cook and stir the meat and onion in a large skillet until the meat is browned.

Drain the excess fat.

Remove from heat and mix in the remaining ingredients except for the pie crust mix and set aside.

Prepare the crust for a two-crust pie according to the package directions.

Divide the dough into 8 equal parts.

Roll out each part, on a lightly floured surface, into a 7-inch circle.

On half of the circle, spread about 1/4 cup of the meat mixture to within 1/2 inch of the edge.

Moisten the edge of the dough with water and fold it over the meat mixture, sealing the edges with a fork.

Place on an ungreased baking sheet and prick the top with a fork.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.

You can serve these as sandwiches or, if you prefer, place them on a plate and top with sauce or gravy.
