The Godiva Chocolate Layer Cake is an exquisite dessert that combines the richness of chocolate with the delicate flavor of Godiva liqueur, providing a unique and sophisticated touch. This recipe has its roots in European tradition, particularly in Belgium, where the Godiva brand is synonymous with fine, high-quality chocolates. Over time, the recipe has found its place in various Latin American kitchens, adapting and gaining popularity under different names.
In countries like Mexico and Colombia, this preparation is often called "Chocolate cake with liqueur," highlighting the use of liqueur as a special ingredient that enhances the flavor. In Argentina and Chile, being a multi-layered dessert, it may also be identified as "Godiva chocolate layer cake," emphasizing its structure and the smoothness of its chocolate buttercream. In all these places, the presence of Godiva liqueur adds an elegant and distinctive nuance that sets this recipe apart from other traditional chocolate cakes.
How to Prepare Godiva Chocolate Layer Cake
For the buttercream: Beat the butter until it is soft.
Sift the powdered sugar and cocoa powder over the butter, add 1/3 cup of Godiva liqueur, and mix slowly until smooth.
For the cake: Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
Beat the butter and granulated sugar, then add the eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
At low speed, incorporate the melted unsweetened chocolate and gradually add the reserved sifted ingredients in three parts, alternating with the buttermilk and the remaining half of the liqueur. Beat until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
Divide the batter among three previously greased and floured 9-inch cake pans.
Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, unmold and place on a wire rack to cool completely.
Refrigerate the layers in the freezer for approximately 30 minutes until firm.
To assemble the cake: Remove the layers from the freezer and brush with the remaining liqueur.
Spread 3/4 cup of the buttercream between each layer carefully.
Once assembled, cover the top and sides with the remaining buttercream.
Serve immediately or refrigerate to preserve. If stored in the refrigerator, take the cake out one hour before serving so it can regain its ideal texture.
For a more attractive presentation, decorate with chocolate curls to taste.
