Cheddar bread ring

Cheddar Bread Ring: History and Origin

Cheddar bread ring is a classic recipe that combines the softness of homemade bread with the intense and characteristic flavor of cheddar cheese. This type of bread is popular in many regions and can be found with variations in several Latin American countries. In Mexico and other countries, this bread is commonly known as "cheese bread in the shape of a ring" or simply "cheese ring." Its origin is linked to the European tradition of preparing stuffed breads or with incorporated ingredients, which were adapted and enriched with local ingredients and their own techniques in Latin America.

In countries like Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, similar versions can be found that vary in the type of cheese and the shape of the dough, but they maintain the characteristic circular shape that makes it easy to share and enjoy at family gatherings or celebrations. The combination of the bread's soft texture and the pronounced flavor of cheddar makes this ring an ideal accompaniment for any meal or simply to have with coffee or tea.

How to Prepare Cheddar Bread Ring

Ingredients: Bread flour, sugar, active dry yeast, salt, milk, butter, cheddar cheese.

Steps:

Combine 1 1/2 cups of the flour, sugar, undissolved yeast, and salt completely in a large bowl.

Heat the milk and butter together until very warm.

Gradually add to the dry ingredients and beat at medium speed in an electric mixer for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally.

Add 1/2 cup of the flour and the cheese.

Beat for 2 minutes at high speed in the mixer, scraping the bowl occasionally.

Incorporate enough additional flour to make a firm but light dough.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, 5 to 8 minutes.

Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top.

Cover with a kitchen towel that has been soaked in hot water and then wrung out until almost dry.

Let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Punch the dough down and turn out onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a 20-inch rope.

Place with the seam side down in a greased 6 1/2-cup ring mold, pinching the ends together.

Cover and let rise in a warm place until almost doubled in size, about 35 to 40 minutes.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes.

Remove from the ring mold.

The crust will become crispy as it cools if you do not do this.
