Beef stew with honey

Beef stew with honey is a traditional dish that combines the tenderness of the meat with the characteristic sweetness of honey, achieving a perfect balance of flavors. This dish has its roots in the home cooking of various Latin American countries, where the technique of stewing has been used since colonial times to make use of less tender cuts of meat, cooking them slowly until a soft texture is obtained.

In different regions of Latin America, this stew can have various names. In Mexico and Central America, it is usually simply called "beef stew," while in some countries of the Southern Cone, such as Argentina and Uruguay, it may be known as "sweet meat stew" due to the incorporation of honey or sugar in the recipe. Despite the variations, the base is similar: a slow and long cooking process that integrates fresh vegetables and a sweet touch that enhances the flavor of the meat.

How to Prepare Beef Stew with Honey

To begin, preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole dish.

Add the meat and quickly fry on all sides to sear it and keep its juices.

Add the onion, green bell pepper, celery, and carrots, frying for 5 more minutes and stirring occasionally so the flavors combine well.

In a separate bowl, mix the honey, lemon juice, mustard powder, tomato sauce, water, salt, and pepper. Pour this mixture into the casserole dish and stir everything carefully to combine the ingredients.

Cover the casserole dish and cook in the oven for 2 to 2 ½ hours or until the meat is tender and the flavors are well integrated.
