Asparagus layer

History and Origin of Asparagus Strata

Asparagus strata is a classic recipe that has become popular in several countries, especially those with European and American gastronomic influence. Its origin dates back to traditional preparations of savory puddings and casseroles that combine fresh ingredients with dairy, ideal for using up bread and other ingredients available at home.

In Latin America, this dish may have different names depending on the region, although it is generally known as "strata" or "savory asparagus pudding." In countries like Mexico or Argentina, it is common to find similar variants in the form of lasagnas or vegetable casseroles, while in other places it may be called names like "timballo" or "savory pudding." Despite these differences, the basic concept of layers of bread, cheese, and vegetables covered with a mixture of egg and milk remains constant, being a nutritious and comforting option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

How to Prepare Asparagus Strata

Ingredients: Asparagus, Baby Swiss Cheese, Bread, Eggs, Milk, Salt, Dijon Mustard, Pepper.

Place 4 slices of bread, crusts removed, in a greased 8" x 8" x 2" pan.

Place a slice of cheese on each piece of bread, then arrange asparagus evenly over the cheese.

Cover each one with another slice of bread.

Mix egg, milk, salt, pepper, and mustard and pour over the bread.

Refrigerate overnight.

Sprinkle the top with additional grated cheese and bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until the pudding is firm.

As a variation, use ham slices instead of asparagus and top with corn flakes and 4 teaspoons of melted butter.
