Star anise, also known as Chinese star anise, is a spice shaped like a six to eight-pointed star, containing small seeds inside. Its flavor is sweet, warm, and very aromatic, similar to licorice, making it a highly valued ingredient in various cuisines around the world, especially in Asian cooking and in some dessert and beverage recipes.
This ingredient comes from the dried fruits of the Illicium verum tree, native to southern China and Vietnam. Traditionally, it has been used both in gastronomy and in traditional medicine due to its multiple properties.
Properties: Star anise is known for its digestive, carminative, and antispasmodic effects, helping to relieve stomach discomfort and improve digestion. Furthermore, it possesses antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds that contribute to food preservation and enhance flavors without the need for artificial products.
In Latin American gastronomy, it may be called by different though less common names, such as anís estrellado or simply anisillo in some countries. However, the term star anise is the most widespread and recognized in recipes and markets.
This ingredient is used primarily in the preparation of stews, broths, infusions, desserts, and baked goods. Its use should be moderate to prevent its dominant flavor from overpowering other ingredients.
