Roma Tomato
The Roma tomato is a variety of elongated, medium-sized tomato, known for its firm texture and slightly sweet flavor with low acidity. Its dense pulp and low seed count make it ideal for sauces, preserves, stews, and preparations where a tomato that does not release too much juice is required.
Originating in Mexico but popularized worldwide, the Roma tomato is a mutation of the traditional tomato, cultivated primarily in temperate and warm climates.
Among its properties, it stands out for its high lycopene content, a natural antioxidant that helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer. It also provides vitamins C, A, and B-complex, as well as minerals such as potassium and iron.
In Hispanic America, the Roma tomato is known by different names, including pear tomato, saladette tomato (in some countries), and most commonly simply as sauce tomato or pulp tomato, reflecting its common culinary use.
