Nopalitos are the tender and fresh pads of the nopal, a type of cactus very popular in Mexican cuisine and in other Latin American countries. They are characterized by their crunchy texture and a slightly acidic and herbaceous flavor, which makes them a versatile ingredient for salads, stews, soups, and as a side dish for various meals.
The nopal originates from Mexico, where it has been a fundamental part of the diet since pre-Hispanic times. Currently, its cultivation extends to various regions of Latin America due to its adaptability and nutritional value.
Regarding their properties, nopalitos are rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Furthermore, they are low in calories and help regulate blood sugar, improve digestion, and have anti-inflammatory effects.
In different Spanish-speaking countries, nopalitos are also known as tunas tiernas or simply nopales, although the latter term usually refers to the plant or the product in general.
