Cilantro sprigs are the fresh and fragrant stems that accompany the leaves of Coriandrum sativum, an aromatic herb highly valued in international cuisine. Originating from the Mediterranean region and widely cultivated in Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East, cilantro provides a citrusy, fresh, and slightly spicy flavor that enhances numerous dishes.
In gastronomy, cilantro sprigs are used both to infuse broths and sauces and to garnish and season side dishes, salads, and various meals. Although the use of its leaves is more common, the stems are equally edible and possess a crunchy texture and intense flavor, making them ideal for preparing pestos, dressings, and marinades.
From a nutritional standpoint, cilantro is low in calories and rich in antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and K, in addition to containing minerals like potassium and calcium. Its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties contribute to overall health improvement.
In different regions of Latin America, cilantro sprigs may be called ramitas de culantro (although strictly speaking, culantro is another plant), tallos de cilantro (cilantro stems), or simply cilantro fresco (fresh cilantro). However, it is important not to confuse it with Chinese cilantro (daikon) or with epazote, herbs that have completely different flavors.
