Caper berries are the edible fruits that grow from the flower of the Capparis spinosa, a plant native to the Mediterranean region. These small berries, similar to capers in size but rounder and with a less intense flavor, are commonly used in cooking to add a touch of acidity, saltiness, and a slight bitterness to various dishes.
Caper berries are harvested just before they fully ripen and are usually preserved in brine or vinegar to maintain their flavor and texture. They are traditional ingredients in sauces, salads, side dishes, and fish plates, standing out for their ability to balance flavors and enhance preparations.
Among their properties, their low caloric content, their richness in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds stand out, in addition to certain vitamins and minerals such as iron and calcium.
In different Hispanic American countries, caper berries may be known simply as capers or, although less commonly, as "capulines" in some places. However, the word "capers" is generally used to refer to both the flower buds (the smaller and more popular ones) and the berries themselves.
