Advocaat (egg liqueur) is a creamy and thick liqueur made primarily from egg yolks, sugar, and alcohol (usually brandy or cognac). Its texture is similar to a liquid custard and its color is a vibrant yellow due to the high concentration of yolks.
Origin: This liqueur has its roots in the Netherlands and Belgium, where it is very popular as a traditional drink during festivities and as an ingredient in desserts and cocktails. The name "advocaat" comes from Dutch and is believed to be related to the word "advocate" (lawyer), because it was originally used to soothe the throat when speaking in public.
Properties: Advocaat is rich in proteins and healthy fats provided by the egg yolks, in addition to containing a considerable amount of sugar and alcohol, so it should be consumed in moderation. In cooking, its creamy texture and sweet flavor make it an excellent ingredient for preparing desserts, toppings, mousses, ice creams, or even for mixing with coffee and cocktails.
Synonyms in Latin American Spanish: "licor de huevo", "crema de huevo", and in some countries it is also simply called "advocaat", keeping its original name. In Mexico and some Central American countries, it is commonly referred to as licor de yema.
